Brief history of tea

The history of tea is rooted in a tradition dating back over 5,000 years. It has shaped culture and was not only a luxury ingredient and commodity, but also a subject of politics, power and war. Tea has been documented in China since 221 BC. Later, the culture was also developed by the British in Europe.

The most important types of tea are black tea, green tea, white tea, oolong tea, pu-erh tea, purple tea and herbal tea.

All types of "real" tea actually come from the same plant. The botanical name of the tea plant is Camellia sinensis.

How do you store tea properly?

Storing tea correctly is important to preserve the freshness, taste and aroma of the tea. Here are some tips on how to store tea properly:

  • Seal airtight: Store tea in airtight containers to prevent air from entering and oxidizing the tea. Sealable tea tins or airtight glass containers are ideal for storing tea.

  • Store away from light: Tea should be protected from direct sunlight, as light can affect the quality of the tea. Keep tea containers in a dark place or use opaque containers to protect the tea from light.

  • Store in a dry place: Tea leaves absorb moisture and can therefore lose quality or become moldy. Store your tea in a cool, dry place to minimize exposure to moisture. Avoid storing tea near water sources or in humid environments.

  • Avoid odors: Tea can absorb foreign odors, which can alter its taste. Therefore, store tea away from strong smelling foods or substances.

  • Temperature: Although tea should be stored in a cool place, a constant temperature is important to avoid condensation. Fluctuations in temperature can also affect the quality of the tea. Therefore, store the tea at room temperature.

  • Original packaging: If you buy tea in its original packaging, which provides an airtight seal, you can store the tea in it. Make sure that the packaging is properly resealed after each use.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your tea retains its freshness and aroma for as long as possible.

How to make a good tea?

Making a good tea depends on several factors, including the type of tea and personal preferences. Here are some general steps to making a great tea:

  • Water quality: Use fresh, cold water, ideally filtered. The water should not be too hard, as this can affect the taste of the tea.

  • Water temperature: The correct temperature of the water depends on the type of tea. Green tea usually requires a lower temperature (approx. 70-85°C), while black tea requires hotter water (approx. 90-95°C). It is important to know the optimum temperature for each tea in order to achieve the best taste experience.

  • Measure the tea leaves: Measure out the correct amount of tea leaves. The recommended amount may vary depending on the type of tea, but the rule of thumb is about one teaspoon of tea leaves per cup of water.

  • Brewing: Place the tea leaves in a teapot or directly in a cup and pour the hot water over them. Allow the tea to infuse for between 2-5 minutes, depending on the type and taste. Check the recommended steeping time for the specific tea to avoid over-extraction, which can lead to a bitter taste.

  • Filter or remove: Remove the tea leaves from the teapot or cup after brewing to prevent the tea from becoming too strong.

  • Enjoy: Serve the tea hot with milk, sugar, lemon or honey.

But of course, there is not just one way to drink the best tea; every culture has its own traditions. If you are curious, the following video shows you seven different ways of preparing tea around the world:
